  • Arrange for a new bank account at the destination city.
  • Check if moving is covered in your personal insurance policy.
  • Make sure you have the information and addresses of your doctor and dentist.
  • Arrange to transfer records from schools to the new location.
  • If you plan to do the packing yourself start collecting suitable containers and packing materials
  • Prepare a list of people to notify regarding your move.
  • Cancel all utilities.

  • Let the post office know that you will be moving.
  • Take your car to be checked.
  • Take pets to the veterinarian and make sure they are up to date with certificates and rabies inoculations.

  • Point out to the movers all the fragile items that need special protection as well as items you do no want moved.
  • Be present when the movers arrive. If you are unable to be there, it is important that someone be authorized to take your place.
  • Say on the premises until loading is finished and see that all your goods are loaded.
  • Review and sign the bill of lading that states the terms and conditions of the move. The bill of lading is also your receipt for the shipment.
  • Give the driver the exact address of your destination
  • Leave your new address with the new occupants and have them forward you the mail.
  • Be available to accept the delivery at the destination and if you can't be there authorize someone to accept the delivery.
  • Check all items as they are unloaded. If you have missing items note it on the inventory list.
  • Keep documents relating to the move as you will need them for verification of moving expenses when the time comes to file your federal income tax returns.
