Preparing an inventory for your mover It may seem like a lot of work, but providing a detailed inventory for your mover is an essential part of getting correct prices for your relocation needs. Many people make the error of providing just the size of their house (number of bedrooms) or storage unit to their prospective movers. Unless you take the time to prepare a detailed item by item list for the mover you will receive only a rough estimate that may change considerably at the day of the move. We recommend that you go room by room with an inventory check list and mark all items of furniture. Don’t forget to estimate the number of boxes to be packed in each room (either by you or the movers). No one can know the exact amount of boxes but it’s essential to include an approximation in your inventory list. Try to count a few additional boxes for each room just to be on the safe side. You can always contact your mover to adjust the number of boxes and your price as the date of the move gets closer and you are fully packed. Once you have the detailed list, its important to provide all movers with it. Compare carefully the methods used to calculate your price (see understanding your moving price article) to make sure you understand all the various bids.
